I’m interested in how you set the Yubikey up. I guess you didn’t had the time to make a follow-up post about the setup procedure. Perhaps you can put some links down here pointing to relevant information.

That said, occasionally it can be finicky.  I usually find rebooting the computer and restarting the tethering app on my phone fixes it.

In the last couple weeks of training the CCs start to expect recruits to be more responsible for themselves, and give them a little more leeway to perform routine tasks without constant reminders.  They’ll also be working to transition them back into normal human beings as they prepare to enter the fleet.  As long as your son maintains the same level of focus and dedication that’s gotten him this far and doesn’t get complacent, he shouldn’t have anything to worry about.  CCs want to see that he understands and is proficient in the training he’s receiving, so if he demonstrates that he’ll continue to progress as scheduled.  The Coast Guard doesn’t want to revert people (it costs them money and reflects poorly on the training process) but more important is ensuring every recruit is properly equipped to perform their duties once they leave boot camp.  When I was there there were only a couple of reasons people got reverted at the late stage of training: major behavioral/disciplinary reasons, such as falling asleep on watch or breaking the rules on liberty at the end of his training; poor performance such as always being slow or late, or constantly receiving really poor marks on tests; and failing to complete all physical fitness tests by the end of training (week 7).  The only other circumstance would be an injury that kept a recruit on the Ward long enough that they’d missed too much training to be able to stay with their company, but that’s out of your son’s control if that happens.

Continue to encourage him, and assuming all goes according to plan you should be able to talk to him on the phone at the end of week 6 and 7.  As long as he continues to perform to his best ability, he should be fine.  Also, feel free to email me his name and mailing address and I’ll send him a letter.

As a side note: you mentioned you have a Mac, so just to give you a heads-up: the Yubikey works 100% with Mac (it’s just a keyboard as far as the computer is concerned) but when you first put it in, Mac OS will ask you to identify what type of keyboard it is. When it asks you to press a key on the keyboard, just tap the button. It will then say it doesn’t recognize it and to choose the type manually. Choose “ANSI (United States)” and you’ll be good to go. This will only happen the first time you insert it; the computer will recognize it every time after that.
