My father and I are headed up to Maine this weekend to close up our summer house. October is a great time of year to be there, since the leaves are changing and the weather is cool, but not so cold that it isn’t fun. I recently rooted my HTC Thunderbolt and put Cyanogen Mod 7 on it, which includes tethering capability. This morning I connected my iMac at work to my phone, and ran a speed test. News broke earlier tonight that Apple founder Steve Jobs died today at age 56. Jobs battled pancreatic cancer for many years, and his disease ultimately took him. While I wouldn’t consider myself an Apple fanboy, I have immense respect for what Steve Jobs accomplished. His vision changed the world, and the way we think about technology. He will be missed.

I’ve been a Flickr user for a few years, but over the past year or so I’ve barely given it more than a glance. It’s not for the lack of a quality service - Flickr works very well for posting pictures online and allowing other people to see them and comment. It’s due to Flickr not meeting my needs or wants for photo sharing anymore, through a lack of some features, the level of photography that it seems to draw, and the lack of my community of people with whom I engage.

After a rather long hiatus, I’ve decided to get back into ham radio. For the past couple of years I’ve been absent from the hobby, but Hurricane Irene and the value of my HT in getting information both from amateur and commercial sources reminded me how much I enjoy it. So I’ve renewed my ARRL membership, reconnected with my local club, and tonight I’m headed to a club meeting. It’s good to be back.

Hurricane Irene is coming. It’s gotten lots of coverage, and by the time it reaches my area it’s expected to be a Category 2, transitioning to a Category 1. While Annapolis isn’t on the direct path for the storm, we’re close enough that they’re projecting up to a foot of rain and a storm surge up to 4 feet high, which has the potential to do a lot of damage.

I use Gmail Chat all the time, both for instant messaging and calling. Since I use Google Voice for all phone calls and text messages, it’s very convenient to make calls through Chat since they integrate with each other. I like the ringtone that Google has for incoming calls in Chat, so I decided to put it on my phone as well. If you’d like to use it as your ringtone, you can download the MP3 below.

One of the projects I had on my list for this trip was to upgrade the tie-off for our boat. Since there are three houses that share one float, we need a method to keep them accessible but off the loading area. The tie-offs are simply lines with weights on the end strung out to a piling that a boat is clipped on to. I decided to change the way ours connects to the dock by splicing an eye in the line and installing galvanized hardware.

We went in to town this afternoon for brunch. I snapped some photos of Townsend Gut, and the bridge that connects Southport to Boothbay.

The view out my window this morning when I woke up…of more fog. Not that it’s surprising or unexpected. We’re headed into town today for brunch and a local reggae cover band. Pictures and videos to come.
