New Radio!

I just got a new radio, an Icom IC-T90A handheld. My first impressions are very good, although I need to replace the stock antenna since it doesn’t seem very powerful. I’m trying to hit repeaters near Buzzards Bay, MA but I’m not having any luck yet. If you’re in the area, I’m listening on the FARA 2 meter repeater most of the time.

Twitter WordPress Plugins: Hit or Miss

A couple days ago I decided to get a Twitter account. It seemed like a cool idea, especially when I saw how Paul Stamatiou had integrated it into his Wordpress blog. Being able to have a real-time status update on my site sounded like a cool, more personal touch to stay connected with readers. I wanted to do it in a way similar to Paul’s site - one line that simply displayed the most recent tweet.

Lotus Elise at Falmouth Car Show

I was at the British Car Show in Falmouth, MA a couple of weeks ago, where somebody had brought a Lotus Elise. Being one of my all-time favorite cars, I decided to take some pictures of it.

Photos of the T.S. Enterprise

I took some pictures of the T.S. Enterprise at Massachusetts Maritime Academy last week, shown below. They were taken near sunset, to get the light coming in low across the port bow.

Designing Your Site: Color Scheme Tools

When designing a web site, one of the most important things to consider is the color scheme. Making use of color effectively is crucial in attracting visitors, and keeping them at your site. Obnoxious, clashing colors can drive people away faster than the page can even finish loading. A well-planned, appealing scheme can keep people at your site longer, and help them remember your site as a well-designed product. Picking the right colors can be a little challenging, especially if you’re not very familiar with the color wheel and the different properties of color.

U.S. Coast Guard Insertion & Extraction Drill at MMA

U.S. Coast Guard from Air Station Cape Cod ran a series of airborne insertion and extraction drills at Massachusetts Maritime Academy last week in conjunction with the T.S. Enterprise.

Windows Vista: A Few Redeeming Values (Sort Of)

I recently got a new computer, which came with Windows Vista. I’m a Linux guy at heart, but like most of us, I’m forced to use Windows by the nature of my work. So, I decided to give Vista a shot, and see what it had to show for itself. To be honest, I really haven’t been impressed…at least not the way I should be after five years since the last version of the Windows operating system was released.

Make Links Look & Feel Like Buttons

Ever wanted to make your links look like buttons, to give your site a more desktop application-like feel? If you’ve tried making an HTML form just to navigate the user to a new page, you know how frustrating this can be. Luckily, CSS offers an easy way to do this. First, let’s write the HTML code we’ll need for this: <html> <head> <title>Button Navigation</title> </head> <body> <div id="menu"> <ul> <li><a href="#">Example 1</a></li> <li><a href="#">Example 2</a></li> <li><a href="#">Example 3</a></li> </ul> </div> </body> </html> Now that we have our HTML, let’s go to our CSS document and make those links look button-like:

Managing Page Menus: Two Valuable WordPress Plugins

This post has been deprecated with features built into newer versions of Wordpress. I’m leaving this post up for legacy information purposes, but I recommend using the integrated Wordpress menu tools to achieve the outcome these plugins provided. One of the nicest aspects of Wordpress is its ability to be used as a complete web site management tool, rather than just a blog. Its ease of use makes it a great solution for people unfamiliar with web site management, and daunted by the complexity of larger content management systems.
